Let’s Go Out –
A Family Eco-Adventure!

Sponsored by the Ministry of Health Promotion and its Community in Action Fund.

Canoeing, Environmental Outdoor Training and Leadership Development Program for all

Eco-Camping: Intended to benefit children from newcomer families whereby they can experience no-trace and naturalization summer camping activities involving hiking, walking, biking, and canoeing. We offer one trip during the summer involving more than 30 campers (children and moms) and from disadvantaged communities that share barriers to outdoor experiential learning.

Youth Eco-Paddling Experience
Eco-Outdoor Scholarship Program:
A 2 week youth outdoor leadership initiative (one week along the Toronto lakeshore and one week at the Lake McCrae wilderness area in Northern Ontario) during the summer session of each year. This initiative, in partnership with the Inner-City Outtripping Centre of the City of Toronto, seeks to provide opportunities to more than 20 visible minority and high risk youth (13 – 18 years old) for a two-week canoeing, environmental outdoor training and leadership development program; to explore different uses of their energy and to practice learned skills with peers in a pleasant and safeguarded environment.

Paddle and Picnic: A unique outdoor experience for children over 6 years of age. Our aim is to offer 2 days during the summer involving more than 25 children and 12 moms from ethno-specific communities (namely Spanish and Somali). Groups participating in the program have the opportunity to learn basic canoe paddling techniques and water safety skills, swim at Sunnyside pool, play cooperative games, participate in a campfire workshop, and spend a day at the beach. In partnership with the Inner-City Outtripping Centre of the City of Toronto.

Keep Paddling! - 2007
Sponsored by MEC – Mountain Equipment Co-op

Twice a week all summer long in 2003 and 2004, canoes were seen along Lake Ontario waterfront at Sunnyside pavilion. Program participants, many of whom had never set foot in a canoe, were from a broad range of groups, including senior Italian women, downtown youth and Somali women. In partnership with the Ontario Recreation Canoeing Association (ORCA), skilled instructors taught basic stroke techniques, and safety on the water.
